JUMP TO RECIPE

These mixed vegetables are a fan favorite. Every time someone has some, they say, “Dang these goooood”! They’re easy to make and take less than 10 minutes to cook so it’s a great choice for hard workers looking for a simple vegetable side dish to cook after a long day of work.

Check the recipe out and give it a shot! If you, like many people, aren’t a fan of frozen vegetables, this recipe will surely bring about a change of heart.

Hey yall, it’s ya boy Jay coming at you with another bangin recipe. And it’s a recipe for what might be my favorite vegetable side dish, frozen mixed vegetables!

Now, I know frozen vegetables seem like an easy thing to make right? Yall probably asking yourselves, “Why he make a recipe for mixed vegetables?”

Well, my YouTube subscribers have been begging me to create some good frozen vegetable recipes. So lately I’ve been posting good easy-to-make frozen vegetable recipes showing yall how to make vegetable sides more enjoyable.

Why try this recipe?

  • You get your nutrients from a variety of vegetables (string beans, lima beans, carrots, peas, and corn) all in one spoonful.
  • They taste great with pretty much any meat (chicken, turkey, steak, fish, and pork) you’re cooking for dinner and…
  • They require little to no labor, unlike some fresh vegetables that take hours to cook and prepare.

With frozen vegetables, all you gotta do is throw em in a pot or skillet with a little water or broth, season them to your liking, and within minutes they’re ready to be served.

How to make frozen vegetables the right way

Here are the 3 most common issues I feel people have when cooking frozen vegetables…

  • Figuring out the best temperature to cook them at.
  • Determining how long to cook them.
  • Deciding what seasonings/spices to use to give the vegetables a good flavor!

The best seasonings to use

My followers are always emailing me asking “What seasonings do you put in your veggies to make them pop”. Well in the case of mixed vegetables, I like to use chicken broth, chicken flavor bouillon cubes or salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.

I think this combination of seasonings, along with butter, gives mixed vegetables an amazing flavor. I actually just had a friend over for dinner the other night who asked me what seasonings I used to make them taste so good.

He not only said they were flavorful but the best-mixed vegetables he’s ever had. He said most people don’t make em this good! Lol!

That was further confirmation that the ingredients I use are the RIGHT ONES because he’s critical of people’s food and a picky eater!!!

Temperature and cooking time

Now, the difficult part for some people as I stated earlier is getting the cooking time right. You don’t want to overcook them to the point where they’re soft and mushy, but you don’t want your vegetables crunchy either.

So cooking time matters. I cook them over medium-high heat for a good 10 minutes with a cup of broth which is just the right amount of liquid to use so that most of it cooks out by the time they’re done.

So frozen vegetables may seem like one of the easier things to cook, but It’s very similar to rice in that —it sounds simple but very few people get it right! By the way, doesn’t it seem only Asian folk truly mastered the art of cooking perfect rice?

Even when I go to renowned 5-star restaurants I find that their rice is often mushy, overcooked, and underwhelming. What’s that all about?! Lol!

Good size for a family of 4-6

Ok, let me get into the details of this particular frozen vegetable recipe. For starters, we’ll be using 1 lb (16oz) of frozen mixed vegetables.

You can find a bag of these suckaz at your local supermarket in the vegetable section of the freezer aisle for those of you wondering. Now frozen veggies usually come in 1 & 2 lb bags, but if you’re unlucky and have trouble finding a 1 lb bag, just use half of a 2 lb bag.

This is just a side dish so a lot isn’t required. I would say the average household holds 4 to 6 people so this 1 lb recipe will be more than enough to feed a family of 4-6 for dinner.

Now for a family of 8, you might want to pick up a 2 lb bag, especially if y’all foodies and love veggies. In which case, you will just double everything in the recipe, except the broth.

Key ingredients and alternatives

Now you don’t need many ingredients for mixed vegetables but I want to touch on the key ingredients, mainly seasonings, and good alternatives if you don’t have one of them on hand.

1. Chicken broth: Chicken broth is always used to provide more flavor. If you don’t have chicken broth, which I love by the way, here are some other good alternatives you can use in place of it. And try to go for low-sodium broth to consume less sodium.

  • Bouillon cubes + water: If you don’t have any chicken broth you can just use water. Just use an extra bouillon cube
  • Vegetable broth: We are making vegetables right lol so how could vegetable broth not make the list. Use vegetable broth if you don’t have chicken broth or bouillon cubes.

2. Chicken bouillon cubes: Ok so this is one of the ingredients that give my mixed vegetables the amazing flavor everyone rant and rave about.

It’s a very important ingredient but below are some good substitutions if you don’t have any bouillon cubes on hand…

  • Seasoning salt: Seasoning salt is what I usually use if I’ve run out of bouillon cubes. Trust me, the mixed vegetables will taste just as good, sometimes I think it tastes a little better when I use seasoning salt.

At one point was thinking about updating the recipe and replacing the bouillon cube with seasoning salt. But yea, this is the best replacement for bouillon cubes in my opinion.

  • Adobo seasoning: Another all-purpose seasoning that I love and think tastes great on anything but that’s why it’s an all-purpose seasoning.

It will give the mixed vegetables a slightly different flavor than bouillon cubes but it makes for a solid replacement if you don’t have seasoning salt.

  • Salt: Now if salt it’s all you have on hand use it and know that you can never go wrong with salt. Lol!

Salt to taste

I just want to put this out for those of you who cant have or dont like a lot of salt or maybe salt sensitive. Salt to taste… which means to add a little salt at a time until the vegetables are seasoned to your liking.

Delicious, flavorful, mixed vegetables. The perfect vegetable side dish.

  • Author: PhillyboyJay
  • Prep Time: 2 Mins
  • Cook Time: 8-10 Mins
  • Total Time: 12 Mins
  • Yield: 4
  • Category: Vegetable Sides
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

1 Lb Frozen Mixed Vegetables
1 Cup Chicken Broth
1 Tbs Butter
2 Chicken Flavor Bouillon Cubes or Salt to taste
1 Tsp Garlic Powder
1 Tsp Onion Powder
1/4 Tsp Dill Weed
1/4 Tsp Black Pepper

Instructions

1. Place a skillet over high heat and add in the broth.
2. After 2 minutes or once the broth comes to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-high heat(7).
3. Add in the mixed vegetables, butter, seasonings, and bouillon cubes, then stir well.
4. Cook the mixed vegetables for 8 to 10 minutes and stir periodically.

Notes

  • If you’re like me and like your veggies well seasoned and feel 2 bouillon cubes aren’t enough, add in 1/4 tsp of salt. I found that adding a little salt in addition to the bouillon cubes made them just right.

There usually isn’t much juice left when I make this recipe but that could be because our stoves/pots/pans are different. Doesn’t matter if you drain the juice or not.
