"You see people struggling so much, I just think that people need help," Dow said about BSJ's role in Burlington.

The thrift store has a new look inside, with the register moved as well.

"We gave it a huge revamp on organization, we made a local art section way more prominent, put out a bunch more neatly organized media clothes," Dow said. "Essentially, [it has] the same vibe as the last store; just a good refresh, I think, is what it needed."

Outside, the store's free bin remains on the curb, with a permit from the city.

Dow said he plans to continue to promote the bin as a site for clothing donations that are free for anyone, no questions asked.

"The free pile is utilized by the entire community," Dow said. "We have people from Colchester and Williston come down with groups of people to shop at the free pile because they know they have a resource of free clothing."

And, at a time when some have expressed concerns about shopping in downtown Burlington, Dow said taking care of the community comes first.

"Burlington is at least a little better than what it's made out to be at this point, and we just try to give everybody a first chance," Dow said.

Battery Street Jeans is open seven days a week and offers store credit for items brought in with an emphasis on keeping things local.
